At Stanground Academy, we are immensely proud to celebrate the exceptional achievements of one of our own – 15-year-old Freddie, who has rapidly risen to become both a national and regional chess champion!

Freddie’s chess journey began less than two years ago, but his incredible dedication, strategic thinking, and passion for the game have quickly propelled him to the top. In a stunning display of talent, Freddie recently took first place in the U1900 rated section at the prestigious FIDE Cambridge Congress, held from August 24-25. Competing against 22 skilled players from across the UK, Freddie emerged victorious, showcasing his chess prowess and determination.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Freddie went on to secure another major win just days later, claiming the Peterborough Chess Club Division 1 title. His relentless drive and love for the game are evident in every move he makes on the board, and his story is nothing short of inspirational.

Freddie’s father expressed his amazement at his son’s accomplishments, especially considering how quickly he has progressed since starting competitive chess. In the beginning, Freddie faced his fair share of challenges, but his perseverance never wavered. From winning just two games in his first three months to now being crowned a champion, Freddie’s journey is a true testament to his hard work and determination.

Freddie himself shared his excitement about his achievements, stating, "I love playing chess, and I'm looking forward to progressing further with a view to representing England in the future."

At Stanground Academy, we are proud to support Freddie on his journey and are thrilled to see him taking the lead in establishing a lunchtime chess club for his fellow students. His passion for the game and willingness to help others grow in their chess skills truly embodies the values of leadership and community spirit that we strive to foster here at the Academy.

Freddie’s accomplishments have not only made his family incredibly proud, but have also inspired students and staff across the Academy. As he sets his sights on representing England in chess competitions, we look forward to supporting him every step of the way.

Freddie’s story is a reminder that with determination, passion, and the right mindset, anything is possible. From all of us at Stanground Academy, congratulations, Freddie – we are so proud of you, and we can't wait to see where your chess journey takes you next!
